Petrol £6 a gallon...? But apparently it’s on the cards

Why are the T16S 900's being scrapped in droves?

A once drove of T16S 900

A once drove of T16S 900

As far as the 900 turbos are concerned I have always preferred the “H” type 8-valve to the 16. The 8-valve is a lot easier to maintain than the 16 from both the hearts and wallets perspective. The 16-valve has always been a bit more temperamental. It is a tad over-complicated and has a very strange cam chain assembly that I’ve always considered a bit Heath Robinson.

When you compare the running cost of a 8-valve against the 16’s, it is not surprising that they run out of road quicker. There is of course the factor that because they were bought as speed mobiles right from the offset and have been driven as such all through their days, older ones become a dodgy proposition unless their service history is faultless.

The same could be said of the 9000 Carlssons. They were thrashed about by the wrong sort of people and as such 75-80% of them are now dead.

There is a morale in there somewhere but right now I’m far too cold to concentrate enough to find it!!

With regards to the 900 T16S, if you’ve got a good one then keep hold of it, cherish it, keep it in a heated garage under a great big duvet because in another five years it’ll be worth a ridiculous amount of money. If on the other hand you own a 9000 Carlsson, cut your losses, admit you bought the wrong one and stick it down the bottom of the garden. It could be regarded as a kind of folley for the working and middle classes.

Regards

Matt
